Jezebel shuts down, lays off staff in ‘excruciating’ decision, parent company says

No big deal for a new media company to fold, but this one was unique for dishing out the kool aid.  Lions remember the rage against anyone over 30 who dished out reality.

Anyways, lions had another FOMO moment, thinking about the conversion of the office park into housing.  For 20 years, houses were built in much less ideal locations because this land was taken.  Their prices were propped up by the belief that the office park would never be an option.

Lions long viewed the neighborhoods bordering the office park as the primest locations.  New construction is always the cheapest time in a house's lifetime.  The houses being built in the former office park are a once in a lifetime deal.

$1.7 mil & up for the detached ones.  $1.2 mil & up for the townhouses.  The common theme these days continues to be building the biggest possible houses for investment returns rather than practical sized houses for living in.  Detached homes under 1000 sq ft might be sub $600,000.  They're all going to be bought by corporations.

For a lion, it would be a 100% investment into just 1 thing & there's little chance of being employed long enough at peak income to make a return before going bankrupt.  Lions can expect to make much less in 5 years.  $1.7 mil would provide a decent retirement anywhere else.

Lions are economically at the level of morbidly obese women renting tiny apartments.

The lion kingdom got to thinking about how much it moved on to its DVD robot from 2003-2006, then copters from 2006-2011.  Both pivots arguably led to no useful product, but also provided insight into future products that did become useful.

If lions never expanded to hardware & stayed entirely focused on Cinelerra for those 8 years, would there have been a more useful outcome?  Cinelerra might have gotten ported to Windows, might have supported more standards like prores, VST, color lookup tables, might have supported MIDI as originally envisioned.

The thing is lions would never have used any of those evolutions & they wouldn't get used by anyone in industry either unless they came with full time free support.  Without support, they would not have made the program prominent in industry.  It's unlikely 8 years of part time effort would have achieved any more than what was already done while it would have achieved more in robotics.

Another outcome was spending 8 years supporting community projects.  Usually they're 1 off ideas needed by 1 guy to finish a degree or get a job.  They usually want you to finish their patch or create a feature so they can get a job.  Then the guy gets the degree or the job & they're never heard from again.  The features never get finished or ever used.  That kind of effort can make the program prominent but not very useful.

There's a similar dynamic in big corporations where stuff is done to get attention, get a buyout, & then it's all forgotten.  There are plenty of free projects run like corporations & guys make a lot of money proving they can manage a volunteer software team like that.  It's a more compelling goal below a certain age & with a certain academic record.

Lions never had the academic degree or the young enough age for managing Cinelerra like a corporation to yield any professional gain.  For a no-name science major over 25, it couldn't be any more than a personal need.

For a Berkeley CS graduate under 25, managing an open source effort like a corporation could unlock a huge career.

T.H.E. W.A.L.L. is the scariest horror movie.  74 year old Duvall stuck to an SUV filled with leftovers reminds lions of their worst dating nightmares, but maybe she's wealthy enough to not have to care about appearances.  A lifetime of smoking definitely took its toll.
