Tesla AI day

Guess the big thing was the Tesla humanoid robot "coming soon". Honda did that 21 years ago. That might have been Honda's peak, along with the 2000 Civic.

It's not obvious why car companies all embark on the same path when they reach their peak. In the unlikely event it never really does any more useful work than the Honda Asimo, if it looks anything like a female version of the humanoid shown, it would be the ultimate entertainment robot for a certain kind of entertainment. The Amerikan people would then get to debate the legality of buying a certain kind of entertainment from a robot.

Otherwise, they're obviously only hiring people who have spent years & years narrowly focused on just neural networks.

Interesting parallel between Cray 20 years ago & Tesla's Dojo division today. The difference is the Cray was a general purpose confuser while the Tesla is specifically a neural network.

They both embarked on the path of custom multi chip modules with elaborate metal enclosures, instead of the cheap x86 PC's that are synonymous with data centers.

Sadly, the planning algorithms are all greek to those of us educated in inferior western public schools. I can vaguely understand the gist of how they implement recurrent neural networks, automate the labeling, automate the training. It's sort of impressive to see a high fidelity, synthetic recreation of a real scene from any angle, but that's more of a demo of data compression than inference.

The main problem is when they rely on a neural network to train itself or automatically label objects, it's more like a cow regurgitating than ingesting any new material. Years ago, they used to advertise generative adversarial networks as the next big thing.

Tesla seems to be solving a much harder problem than SpaceX. Getting starship to work is mainly about moving as much steel as fast as possible. There's still still some magic the human brain does to avoid needing an exaflop to drive a car.
