With vaccine production in hindsight, a virus pandemic 30 years ago would have been much more devastating. We could have accelerated the creation of remote work & remote classes using dialup modems, but we didn't have RNA vaccines or any semblance of engineering a viral vector for human use. Genome sequencing was much slower & more expensive.

Without a vaccine, we would have had rolling lockdowns for years. The economy would have truly been crippled, setting back progress enough that maybe we'd still be watching low definition TV on VHS & carrying around CD players now.
