The mane highlights of the shape of water were the shapes of the 1950's done to an extreme level.  Their definition of home automation was different than today's, yet they still had a fascination with home automation.  Who needs motorized air vents & desks when you've got clock radios & intercoms.  It really was the jet age, but lions are now struck more by how high the standard of living was.  There's no way an employee today could afford a house & a new car on a whim.  There are cues that they just moved in.

The 1950's cadillac show room was a masterpiece.  1950's movie palace was a masterpiece.  There's not much to the alien but a guy in a costume with magical healing abilities.  It's not easy being a mcguffin.

The pirated copy doesn't have any subtitles during the russian scenes.  Lions only gleamed the russian spy failed to do his job & was killed.

It's otherwise a very traditional Guillermo del Toro movie, clumsy heros who can never get it together, a villain with a grotesque injury, very artistic sets.

Another classic on the hard drive is Iron Eagle.  The mom is now 10 years younger than the lion kingdom.

The dad is 10 years younger than the lion kingdom, but holy hairpieces he was a lot more alpha.  He wouldn't have been flying anymore at age 40, but doing a desk job.

Rewatching it again in HD is like seeing it for the 1st time, but holy hairpieces it's campy.  There's not much visually to it, but they retained more of the 4:3 coverage in the 16:9 version than others.

The computer monitors really benefited from HD.

The high point is the car.

It looked like he was doing some high end rework in 720x480, but he was really just removing a jammed tape.  You'd never handle tape with screwdrivers as shown.  Screwdrivers are magnetic.

It was just a common walkman with a 1/4" connector for putting it through the car amplifier.  The extra switch might have been for selecting the audio source.

The leg rest was shown in more detail.  Once again just 1/4" connectors with a project box containing a pot & switch.  The lion kingdom inherited the same right angle TRS connectors.  You'd never use such bulky connectors in a portable gadget now, but that was all we had in 1985.  Never could figure out where he put all the tapes.

The concept of a military town was very much a thing in 1985.  The idea of families living out their lives on a base & half the graduation audience wearing uniforms is quite foreign nowadays.  The military downsizing of the 90's ended an entire civilization.

The villain was bald.  The lion kingdom is reminded it was all about flying rather than any plot or dialog.  Flight time was the centerpiece of every character's day, even the villain.  Movies like this in the 80's were trying to sell toys.  The mane character in the movie was the toy, so character development wasn't a factor.

This neighborhood is the dumpiest low point of lion runs.

It's not on the mane road, but on 1 of the packed couldesacs.  Lions can only imagine these houses were intended for large wealthy families to grow old in before they became rental properties for transient H1B's.  No-one stays around more than a few years.
