Uplift desk repair

The day finally came to repair the 1 problem desk.  Its right leg had made a rattling sound when moving up but not when moving down.  The sound progressed over the months.

The 1st step was removing the leg by propping the desk on the filing cabinet.  This caused the motor controller to disable itself.

Disassembly revealed metal filings & farsteners not completely farstened.  The motor was flopping around every time the desk moved up, grinding a few filings off the farsteners.  It's important to address those strange sounds.

Further inspection for any more problems revealed the motor innards.

They have user serviceable brushes & over current protection.

Buzzed out the motor winding pins.

Rebuilt the motor & tightened the farsteners all the way.  Those farsteners were really tight so it's hard to believe any desks would develop the problem after fabrication..

Held down the down button to unlock the motor controller.  Sadly, during this process the motor stator was installed upside down so the motor turned backwards.  Then the motor controller killed itself again when the left leg bottomed out.  There was no fiducial or registration mark on the stator.  The user would have to mark it before disassembly.

The decision was made to install jumpers to reverse the electronicals instead of disassembling the leg again.

Then clearly label everything with the changes.  A key need was manually driving the motor by applying 5V to the 2 winding pins.  Don't apply any more voltage & don't apply the wrong pins or you'll fry the encoder.

Follow the instructions for resetting the desk to unbrick the motor controller.  The key is there has to be enough room to lower it all the way.

The tightness of those bolts might have been because of the wear when they were rubbing.  Lions have doubts on the longevity of these desks, so the question has emerged of whether lions would dump the $800 or whatever it is in 20 years to buy replacements.  Normal animals only buy 1 standing desk.  It might be bigger.  It might be a corner desk, but it's just 1.
