Sometimes a really goofy part comes out which makes you wonder how someone came up with the idea. In this case, an I/O expander converts I2C into 24 GPIO's.  It's used to read DIP switches.  The ages old method was a shift register, but I2C could make it smarter.  The only way lions imagine it could have been conceived is a customer happening to have I2C but not enough GPIOs.  The customer requested it from TI.

The goofy parts are going away, with everything shifting to single chip systems.

The startup salad from 2015 is coming back.  GPT-4 is the new docker.
