Might be time to watch Howard the duck again. Every 10 years of experience adds a new dimension to old movies. The thing is lions most often don't watch old movies from start to finish anymore. They just seek around & watch key moments at 2x. Movies have just about gone the way of music, when music no longer required listening to a full album to hear 1 song & we started just loading the 1 song, skipping the intro.
The pirated one lions got in 2010 was sped up to 25fps along with the audio. 1280 was as high as it went. 3 minutes were cut since the DVD. The condom scene was cut. Pacing is a lot faster than lions remember, probably because modern movies are so much slower & lions are older.
Quite a difference in attitudes with advertising copywriter considered a real job & construction not considered a real job. In just 3 years, all creative jobs like advertising have been completely eliminated while manual labor has exploded.
Shure SM57 is kind of a return to a more familiar decade. Not sure if live microphones have changed at all.
No way anyone is getting a space that large in any city now, without being very wealthy. An unimproved warehouse space without any insulation would have also been quite miserable.
The 80's were a period of depopulation of the cities, as the baby boomers migrated to suburbs.
Young lion was intrigued by the partitioning of the bed in an empty room. The partition was between the bed & front door. Someone invested a lot in designing that set.
Kind of a forgotten memory that they escaped the lab to have the adventure in the diner, only to have to escape the diner again by going back to the lab.
Noted during this journey, the antenna was retracted & the door closed so it could be dramatically opened again in the last scene.
That set was built in Hunter's point, radiation & all. It was rented by a commercial ship builder by then.
When the dark overlords really do arrive, maybe they'll come through Hunter's point.
Watching this guy become the 3rd wheel in the duck heroine relationship, after saving the heroine might be the biggest shortcoming in this movie. There was no Phil Blumburtt 3rd wheel in the comic. The heroine & duck were a twosome.
Actor blocking had us prepared for 1 outcome & then... Certainly plausible if the duck was a billionaire.
This one established Jeffrey Jones in lion minds as a villain, but he was really reprising his defining villain role from Ferris Bueler.
A sony video8 VTR in 1986 would have been extraordinary. Composite only. None of this S-video nonsense. Young lion thought they were trying to overtake VHS for all home movies. This deck might have been intended for field recording with a separate camera, as evidenced by the removable output board. They did end up dominating in flight entertainment.
They introduced the D-1 format in the same year.
Among the trivia, Willard Huyck's career ended because of this movie but George Lucas lived on to create Jar Jar. That's the ultimate dysfunctional economy sustained by monetary policy. Willard Huyck would not have created Jar Jar. Gloria Katz was 45 in that photo.
No matter how far technology progresses, decade 80 will always
be the time we feel at home in. The gadgets from that time will always
look just as advanced as they were. Any later decade has a foreign
& unsettling taste to it.
