Another run through polar express this year. Full review: https://growmane.blogspot.com/2023/12/polar-express-continues-to-intrigue.html
That shot of the train in the context of the parade ground got the lion kingdom's attention. It was the centerpiece. Scenes of the remote canadian wilderness on xmas eve night continue to intrigue.
archive.org obtained the rights to the original book, after many years. This one was even downloadable, in somewhat of a badly cropped, half assed scan.

Striking resemblance to certain scenes in the movie. For all the hype about automated book scanning, the quality is absolutely horrendous. The book had none of the romance between the hero & the heroine, the adventure in the north pole factory, the hunt for the lost ticket, the out of control train, the spoiled brat, the skeptical kid, the ghost. It was a very simple kid book.
2nd year in a row without an xmas eve night run, because of weather. It was last done in 2023. Settled for some slow intervals & a 12 miler between storms. Real xmas magic is the xmas eve night run. You're really lion clause with the robot decorated on those nights. Pondered wearing a hat, if only there was room to store it & lions weren't moving to a hot climate.
The move is live, in the next 5 years, barring an economic disaster. The original idea was 2033 if the lion kingdom's career took off & 2030 if the career collapses. The 3rd possibility was none of the above. The lion accounts could slowly melt up, lion career neither takes off nor stutters, & lions just hit a number by 55 that doesn't justify further paychecks. The typical age in this industry is 55.
XMas was many days of virga, heavy rain, & donuts brought back on xmas eve, only to not get eaten before they expired. The peak of 7 days of wind & virga arrived on xmas night, with 1" of rain. The rain would not end until the weekend & then would resume on new years eve.
Then came yet another failed omelette attempt. Tried frying bacon separately, piling it up, & putting whole pieces in with the cheese. It took 2 hours & it wasn't cooked enough. When frying bacon, it must be overcooked to the point of being brittle. The last bacon frying was xmas 10 years ago. The next one will be in a bigger kitchen.
A bunch of candycanes & a full quart of egg nog rounded out xmas. Lions paid the price for egg nog without lactase supplements all night & the next day. Bacon grease might have also played a role. The smell of undercooked bacon lingered for many more days. It would be the last xmas experiment, probably for all kitchenettes.
The problem with tried & true xmas is the sausage banquets of 20 years ago have become year round, as the price of everything else has gone way above sausages. Lions have had decent results with stuffing, but it needs turkey.
