Started working on Amityville Horror 1979. Seeing video stores promoting the hell out of it throughout the 80's, young lion pondered why the parents never rented it. IMDB ranked it higher than Apex. It didn't take long for it to get up to 2x.
Was delighted to see a young Strickland. Didn't that guy ever have hair? He was only in 30 seconds.
Then a funny scene debating the merits of spending $80k on a house. It's currently in the mid $1M's & blocked from a direct zillow address search. So basically, anything just $1M today is the scene of a mass murder.
The creepy windows in the real house were replaced at some point.
Between supermen 1 & 2, cigarette burning Lois Lane had to trudge through the shawshank sewer of amityville. We forget 1 reason everyone was skinny 50 years ago was because they all smoked.
Despite its low IMDB rating & boredom, it actually was a financial success, probably from the amount of promotion.
Vintage audio gear is prominently featured. It implied the standard issue 70's mono tape recorder was what the wife used while the husband had the component system. Sadly, more boxes than speakers were shown. The Altec lansing nine series 2 weighed 56lbs.
Along with a game of connect 4. It's kind of an archive of life in 1979.
Axe murderers were a common theme in the 70's. It made lions appreciate how hard it was to create Kubrik's depiction.
By lion age, nothing was particularly shocking or horrifying. There weren't any monsters or makeup. Evil dead 1 actually engaged lions more. A movie needs monsters.
Kiwipedia has the real Lutz's abandoning the house as depicted in the movie, but because the heating system was broken. Kiwipedia doesn't have anything on whether they abandoned their belongings. It's kind of remarkable that 6 murders absolutely didn't cause the place to be haunted. We really are just bags of protoplasm.
The house was built in 1928.
A map from 1873 shows Richmond Ave formerly being Ketcham Ave. Ocean Ave where the house is was formerly Bayview Ave. The house was formerly where W.K. meets the water. The land was undeveloped until 1928.
