Another record high & another sale of S&P 500 to manetain constant asset allocation.  Lions still don't think Warsh is ever going to raise rates.

Media said it popped because of a positive Iran headline.  Another headline said US was out of missiles.  What if it only popped because treasury interest was paid today & it was reinvested.

 The mane thing on lion minds is how all these humanoid robots propping up Tesla's valuation are going to create any value if they've already gone the way of quad copters & been banned everywhere.  They're only going to be useful on factory floors.  You're not going to be allowed to use them in any airport or most spaces.

Baby it was hot outside.  87 during the speedy sections.  90 during the return.  The tendon didn't hurt.  Lions pondered sneaking in just 1 6 minute paced interval somewhere, one day.

 Fired up the bigfoot again after another 9 years, 29 years total, this time using the cheapest USB to IDE adapter.

It now has a lot of unreadable sectors, getting stuck on random data. 

 It eventually wrote & read a 1GB file at 5.7-6.5MB/sec & got the right md5sum.  The original speed 29 years ago was closer to 5MB/sec.  In the old days, it had to be set to 16 bit PIO.  The USB adapter might max it out.  It still runs as quiet as when it was new.  No vibration like some newer hard drives which perished.

Perhaps the original magnetic imprints have degraded & reformatting it would bring it back.  Pondered reformatting it but can't imagine what to put on unreliable 4GB.  That's less than the smallest SD card.

 It's a mechanical museum piece marvel now, gradually declining every time it's spun up, complete with its window for checking the condition of the platter.  Not very confident in the adhesive sealing that window.  

 

Continuing to other hard drives with the IDE adapter, the lion kingdom's 2nd hard drive, the 17GB Maxtor had similar retries as the quantum but seemed to recover over time.  The other hard drives from 2000-2010 are still doing well.  Hard drives from 2010-2012 not so well.  There's quite a bit of space on the 120GB-200GB drives which could store backups.  Basically, anything above 100GB remanes a useful amount of storage, certainly more than 5 years ago.  

  Sadly, the pre 2000 drives were all reformatted. Stuff was quickly moved to CD-R. They all have different evolutions of the basic root filesystem.



 

 The IDE adapter failed to power any 2.5" drives.  It needed a hub with more current or a JST connector hack.  Helas, the 2.5" 20GB was dead from a head crash.  It might have always been dead or it might have been killed by plugging in the energized adapter.




 

 Made a switch to select 1 power source & allow the adapter to be powered on after being plugged into USB.  The lone surviving IDE 2.5" had the standard root filesystem.  2.5" drives were a fascination to young lion, but are now quite obsolete.

Its theatric run over in 1 month, Project Hail Mary arrived on the hard drive in short order.   After running the Michael Jackson movie for just a week, the IMAX theater now seems to be derelict.  They could be reserving it for private screenings or it could be too expensive to operate. It's a growing number of movies which won't be available in blu ray.  Lions continued to be perplexed by the inferior quality of webrips.      Skimming through it, the resemblance to 80's depictions of the future was striking.         It was a time when the future was painted white & noodled.  Sometimes you have to go back to go forward.   Moving on, they made every effort to pack as much of the book in a 2:30 screening time as possible.  The shots are all very quick.  It was like watching normal movies at 2x.  The book being intended from the start to be a movie definitely helped.   Computer animated exterior s...
