If you're renting to work in a job center, you're losing ground beyond a certain age. You're betting against "1 time price increases" in housing costs, wiping out decades of paychecks. Now another incentive is gone: the 401k catch up contribution. 401k catch up contributions were a big motivation for working after 50 & now they're gone. Finally, you're paying social security which is going away in 8 years. They are not going to bail it out when the smallest generation, generation X, is 62. They might bail it out for baby boomers & millennials. Generation X doesn't have any voting power.

There's literally going to be a 25% reduction for just those born after 1967.  Then 15 years later, there's going to be a new benefit for those born after 1980 because those are the generations with the votes.

Roths pay off during periods of very high returns like 2010-2024 when most of the capital is coming from investments. 401ks pay off during periods of very low returns like 1999-2010 & probably now, when most of the capital is coming from a tax break. That's another way the end of 401k catchup contributions is hitting gen X hard.  They're not going to be working long enough for a new roth option to achieve significant capital gains.

5500 would be quite the buying opportunity.

Slogged through The Dive, thinking Jennifer Lawrence was in it.  She's actually too old.  Finished most of it at 2x-4x.  As is common nowadays, a lot of reviewers watched it at 1.5x & above.  This is the impact of novel time stretching methods created in the last 20 years.

The problem for lions was how someone so incompetent was certified for diving.  It was a case of everything that could possibly go wrong going wrong.

Unfortunately, getting stuck under a rock is usually fatal for a diver.  Heavenly mother just decided it was her time to go.  Many divers are permanently entombed in the FL aquifer.

It was basically 60 minutes of air extended to 80 minutes through many flashbacks.  Lions could imagine having at least 1 backup air tank stationed near the cave they were about to enter, a phone more accessible than what they had, not diving under a known rock slide area, staying in an area where emergency air could be continuously provided.

The biggest problems were not having any phone & being in the middle of nowhere.  That situation killed athletes in much less dire circumstances.  Some of the problems were written in of course, the rockslide trapping their spare tanks, the heroine being too mentally wasted to notice the rocks falling from above.

The spacing out & the cluelessness made lions wonder what they were doing out there in the 1st place.

1 big question was whether to wait for the boat or go back down.  She decided to go back down right when the boat turned around.  It was an unfortunate piece of written tragedy.

A much better movie was

Haven't seen Uncle Buck in at least 30 years, but it's still as vivid as it was originally.  HD was a new experience.  It's a very easy one to download for testing downloads over wifi.

There was no recording from TV, but it might have been on all the time.  Don't have many memories of TV consumption from 2000-2008.  It was always on in the background but manely the midnight CNBC talkshow or channel surfing.  Most of those years were spent on the road.

The standard of living depicted was of course, insane by today's standards.  Chicago really was the center of the universe in the 80's.  There was some implication of how well off the family was, but to us, they were just middle class in the midwest.

The real house was last sold in 1998 for $1M.  It might have been $300k in 1989, then inflated by the movie.

39 year old Elaine Bromka was a hottie.  They would have had pensions in those days, freeing up all their disposable income.

Bitch daughter was a lot darker than lions remembered.  She wouldn't have been written that harsh today.

The spoiled lunch was another bit which wouldn't have made it, today.  You'd think someone as large as Buck knew how to feed himself without dying.

There was a backstory about wart hag being hardened in the navy.  It wouldn't have caught on, today.

Politics & economics were a bore in the 80's.  It really showed how few were in the stonk market & how much less destiny was at the whims of government then.  Not so, nowadays.  Of course, Buck was also poor & wouldn't have cared about the stonk market.

We all have cozy memories of cooking experiments on a cold winter morning when we had nothing else to do & our schedules were completely free.  Likely, these events never really happened as remembered.  Lions cooked sausage experiments on xmas mornings & bacon experiments on xmas nights.  The cozy feeling of cooking memories might be evolved.

Lions never had a real kitchen, so it might have been from imitating a lifestyle someone much wealthier could afford.

The 34 year old neighbor looked a lot older, 34 years ago.  Someone like that, living alone in that neighborhood is as far fetched as it gets.

Unbelievable how many good movies were just in 1989.  It wasn't just because the lion parents rented the most that year.
