1st hard drive failure in the last 40 years.  There were unplugged drives killed off by static electricity & altitude changes but this was the 1st live drive.  It was making increasing vibration noises over several months & gradually became too hot to touch. Managed to back it up.  Definite copper oxidation from the heat.  It was made during 1 of the hard drive shortages from 3rd world flooding.

That was the oldest.  There's now a pair of 1TB from 2014 on a check twice list.  Those aren't backed up.  There's a memory of /mov being backed up but nothing labeled.  There are enough 100GB & above to back up fragments but they're either already partial backups or require an IDE adapter.  Most of the obsolete storage is filled with the same files that lions worked on, on a laptop.  Lions just copied them to a bunch of laptops as they died off.  Drives below 100GB are probably going to be scrapped.

 The rest is either going to be scrapped when lions die or join the sum of all animal knowledge in the orbital datacenter.  While there are casualties, the 4.3GB quantum & 17GB Maxtor survive for posterity.

Those are now $600 & beyond.

There's a chance putting them in power saving mode, constantly spinning up & down all day wears them out faster.  The 2TB was barely ever run before it failed.

/mov backups: 

Decided to scrap the operating system & development on some old drives & use any leftover space for really important media backups.  The big ones were /mov/piano, /mov/mpeg, many home photo directories from /mov.  All the media on the old drives stayed intact.  Another 250GB can be freed up on the 1TB SSD since lions aren't planning on ever going back into Mac OS or that Windows installation.  It just requires a temporary 500GB.  The 1TB SSD has the final state of the laptop files on all the other hard drives.

Created a BACKUPS file in /mov describing where the bits were split up.  A lot of /mov was actually backups from other hard drives.


To be scrapped.

 

Lots of ABS & acrylic still intact after 25 years.  It probably lasts longer in that sealed environment.  They use acrylic because it lasts longer.

 

The platters make good chimes, of 1 pitch.  They trigger the neighbor's dog.  Probably would have to grind off mass to tune them.  The finish on those platters is so accurate, they stick together.

 

Recovered some crystals & 3 pin oscillators.  The middle pin is GND.  The outer pins are V+ & clock, in an unknown order. They might be common crystals with a center GND, but they had no loading capacitors & they had a 100k between the outer pins.

Its theatric run over in 1 month, Project Hail Mary arrived on the hard drive in short order.   After running the Michael Jackson movie for just a week, the IMAX theater now seems to be derelict.  They could be reserving it for private screenings or it could be too expensive to operate. It's a growing number of movies which won't be available in blu ray.  Lions continued to be perplexed by the inferior quality of webrips.      Skimming through it, the resemblance to 80's depictions of the future was striking.         It was a time when the future was painted white & noodled.  Sometimes you have to go back to go forward.   Moving on, they made every effort to pack as much of the book in a 2:30 screening time as possible.  The shots are all very quick.  It was like watching normal movies at 2x.  The book being intended from the start to be a movie definitely helped.   Computer animated exterior s...

   Amusing that Grok applied an IPv6 style pseudo header to the computation of an IPv4 ping packet, even though IPv4 doesn't use the pseudo header.       Another Grok error was in a basic TCP demonstrator.  To avoid a TIMED_WAIT on the server blocking the port, you have to exit the server without closing the socket.   These errors take a lot more time to track down than doing it the old way.  It might be fixed in paid versions of Grok.
