Why resuming a programming project is so hard: this has perplexed lions for decades. It's easy enough to start a project from scratch. The idea seems easily attainable. It quickly grows in complexity but you're able to keep going. You force yourself to put it away, early in the morning after.
The next day, it becomes really hard to pick up where you left off. The cliff seemed shortest when lions were younger & might have gotten harder with increasing age. Young lion seemed to pick up where he left off as naturally as eating.
For the most part, just getting in the 1st keystrokes or searching around for where you left off are the hardest part, then it all comes back & you can always get back the same intensity. The key factor might be the loss of the short term memory of where you were.
There might be loss of short term memory with increasing age or increasing lack of faith in success with increased experience. With increasing age, there's more of a need to have music or some kind of white noise in order to focus. It may be a new need or it may be that music was something coming from the radio in younger years you never had to think about, while it now takes some effort to find.
1 thing that might have fought against the cliff is getting suspend mode to work in Linux. It either didn't work for a long time or was really hard. Can't remember getting it to work until after 2018 & it still barely works. That keeps all the windows & text editors where they were.

What would a lion have done in that situation? Lions were told to stay put in an earthquake, but if the building was on fire or hit by an airplane, a lion would damn well get out. There is little doubt about that. Lions didn't obey orders from simple animals.
It was a time when information was scarce. There was no live streaming, no news feed on a phone. They didn't know an airplane hit the building, but he did see chaos, felt shaking, & saw the elevator go back down. Maybe if the building was big enough, there wouldn't be a temptation to get out.
The thing is lions were always the animals who wanted to find out what was happening. If a movie was being made or it was fleet week, the lion was always going to see what was going on. If a plane crashed into the building, a lion was damn well going to get out & try to see it.
There must have been others in the building who never knew anything was happening & just suddenly found themselves falling. These were all office workers, good at 1 thing but not very bright.
It's hard to believe someone could fall 22 floors, somehow not get crushed by all those steel beams or covered in flames from above.
