In another sucker punch, Chinese men woke up to find they would no longer be retiring at 60 but now 63.   Chinese women discovered they would no longer retire at 55 but 58.  A story of things to come, as regards social security.  Lions still don't believe they'll be working after 60 & would be damn lucky to still be making money at 58.

 Interestingly, life expectancy is only reported from the Mao famine onward, which gives a false impression of rapidly rising longevity being the cause of the shrinking retirement fund.  More realistically, the gubment is running out of someone else's money.

Another weekday crusher run, in search of the latest failed infrastructure project.  Lions have recently been able to recover in only 1 day but the days of back to back crushers are over.  It's still guaranteed to be walking for 24 hours.

 

The failed Kamalif dream.  Calif* is suddenly the state everyone is in love with, but nothing still works.  Are all these kamal voters going to move back to Calif* or are they full of shit?

 Lions have pondered what happened to the bodies.  Intuitively, they should all be compressed into a small blob of goo, somewhere in the rear dome under the pileup of carbon fiber shards.  More likely, the remanes were somewhere else on the ocean floor but the coast guard would never show any photo which included the bodies. 

 

Being squished into a 1" square blob of protoplasm made of other middle aged male innards is about the worst way to go.

 

 Apparently some of Stockton got on the green carpet. We're all just carpet stains.

Nothing but tissue paper at that pressure.

 

 Lots of attention on the interface between CF barrel & front dome.  Here, the end of the CF was expected to resist all the pressure with no opposing force from the titanium ring.  Only a thin flange & glue were there to align it.  Normal submarines rely on opposing forces on all areas to passively press the bits together.

 

So the end of the CF was believed to be 1 sneeze away from crushing, sheering off the inner flange.

There are lots of notes about voids in the adhesive between the CF plies, wavy CF plies, porosity of the adhesive between plies, glossy regions of adhesive.  There were many wrinkled CF plies which were ground flat or which tented voids between plies.  As CF plies added up, they tended to amplify the wrinkles & create voids in the adhesive. 

2 hulls were made.  The one made in 2017 was scrapped in 2019 & definitely had more flaws.  Delaminations were a big deal in the 1st hull but less in the 2nd hull.  CF wrinkles were visible in imprints in the adhesive joining the CF to the titanium.

The wrinkles got a lot of attention. 

Bent like playdough.

 

Whether the defects were accounted for in the margins is unknown.  It definitely wasn't up to the job.

 

Interesting acoustic & strain sensor data.  Note the scale of the acoustic sensor hides a lot of excitement during the pressure changes.  They found 1 of the strain gauges drifting higher with every dive while acoustic activity was the same. 

Manly Scott noted dissimilar materials with different rates of compression & the big acoustic hit after surfacing which coincided with the strain gauges shifting.  The acoustic monitoring worked but was ignored.  They also lifted it without a load spreader.
