Lions remember Carter

Carter became the 1st president to actually witness 100 years of the country's history.   It happened at the same time Iran rejoined to the 100 year arab war, almost like Iran was celebrating its buddy's birthday.  Lions only remember the media promoting him as a nice guy & none of the reality of inflation, the arab war, unemployment.

Lions still remember living in the cheapest 1 story floorplan in south San Jose in 1981, hearing the kids say this tough Reagan guy was going to fix everything & pondering why no-one wanted the nice Carter guy.  There was a boy, probably german & asian girl in the next 2 houses.  The asian girl took to being repelled by lions.  Lions once ventured in a 2 story house next door & saw the afternoon sun peering through a foggy window into the darkened stair well, with plush red carpet.

The ice cream truck was a big deal every afternoon, but lions didn't have any money.  Most everything was a buck.

That summer also brought a failed attempt to raise a cat.  The old man said don't let the cat out of the garage, then said we couldn't keep a cat in a garage.  Lions searched ever since for a retroreflective heart pet ornament.  It was a sandwich of 2 panels of box reflectors, molded inside transparent red acrylic.  Unlikely anything designed to the standards of 1980 would be effective enough to be sold today.

Lions got pretty good at riding a bike in circles on that street, came pretty close to falling during 1 steep turn, then developed their chin scar after a fall.

The old man was waging a battle against gophers during that summer, burying a fence underground.  Lions finished 1st grade & began struggling in 2nd grade just an empty field away.  Music class was the low point but lions still got a big fat F scratched across the entire page of at least 1 english assignment.

Imagine the shock of discovering the gopher fence when the back yard was renovated, a relic of a long lost time when the empty field abutted the lot & a lion could scarcely imagine being over double digits in age.

Remember it being set quite a way from the rear, so it would have perished when the pool went in.  Lions remembered more of that time than they remembered.  The next house was bought in winter of 1981-1982 & lions transferred in the middle of 2nd grade.  The move happened fairly quickly.  The 1st day in the new school was about telling time with an analog clock.

Democrats have traditionally been seen as bad babysitters of the war mongering countries & our succession appointed lord & savior Kamal has not disappointed.

The goog won't provide any recent photos of Carter, but footage only on X showed he's manely in a vegetative state & probably not witnessing 100 years of the country's history.  Lions hope to be better off, but it's a crap shoot.

Every gootuber eventually settles into 1 low effort message & they just repeat the same message, harvesting revenue.  Azul's message is to not focus too much on saving money before 30 or work too long after 60. He's a proponent of the ACA.

He strangely mentioned relationships as a key need for retirement.  Most animals seem to want to be alone more as they get older.  Lions never wanted to deal with someone else's health problems, kids, financial problems, ex husbands.  There was just a need to get over someone.

The ACA was a new twist in retirement healthcare.  Before then, there was just private insurance.  There's a minimum income to qualify for ACA subsidies.  The subsidies then phase out until a maximum income.

Below the ACA limit is medicaid, which has a $2000 asset limit in FL so lions won't qualify.

Most people who are on the internet have very large multi million dollar stonk holdings & are collecting dividends or selling shares to hit the ACA minimum.  The internet still tends to select for male programmers because these are the people sitting at keyboards & screens most of the time.  These are all the dysfunctional college students on usenet 30 years ago & they've only compounded in wealth since then.

They're adjusting their distributions to get the most subsidies.  15 years ago, they had large amounts of rental properties & paid themselves dividends to adjust their income.  30 years ago, they were living on interest from treasuries & had to take whatever the interest rate was.  The situation has changed 3 times since lions entered the workforce.

Lions suspect stonks, savings accounts, & rental properties will have very poor returns for the next generation & there will be great volatility.  Someone making money & buying the dips or someone with enough money for 2% to be a lot might get ahead but passive income is probably dead.  It is a lost decade scenario.

With interest headed to 0-2% & lions living manely on the cash account, lions will not make enough to qualify for the ACA.  It is, like most democrat programs, socialism for only the rich.  Interest could always shoot up to 2%, but that's way beyond what countries with 3x debt to GDP are paying & probably not going to be enough.

Lions have been pondering how countries lower their interest rate when their debt explodes.

Reached sort of an impasse on improving Cinelerra's screencap function.  No-one is using it, but lions use the hell out of it.  It seems recording's last hurrah was 2011 with the video scopes.  It was just a jelly bean feature lions saw in final cut pro that appeared necessary to improve the quality of webcam footage.  Since then, recording has only been for debugging webcams & screen capping with no use of the scopes.

Recording originally had to be integrated in the mane program to support labeling & full duplex.  There was originally a single button which simultaneously started playback on the timeline & recording.  Lions labeled points of interest when recording TV or radio.  Young lion imagined it being used by someone else to play 1 track at a time while listening to previous tracks.

Another option it had was to record an infinite loop, keeping a user defined amount of time.  This option died with video, though young lions sure thought hard about it.  Seem to recall briefly admiring the idea of encoding temporary files like mjpegtools did & multiplexing them during the close.  Storage eventually became limitless enough to not need it.

The original features would have made it preferable as a standalone program that saved an EDL with labels.  Lions remember recording the radio with it as a standalone program.  The nice thing about the monolithic program is only 1 build process needs to work for everything to work.

The trend has been towards delegating new functions to minimal command line utilities to reduce cost.  Lions are simply running out of time to experience all the things they want to do.  There really isn't enough time left to make a complete GUI & installer for an audio compressor the way 22 year old lion did or a complete GUI for a recorder.

The video scopes don't support YUV444 & the screencap options all should be in a dedicated window.  It's a hodge podge of widgets that still works though.  Because 99% of the usage is screencapping, that has grown to fill most of the interface.  The hodge podge of widgets is faster than having to open a window like the channel window.

What we're really after today with programming is the same thing young lion wanted: to have tools or experiences that were unaffordable or unattainable by any other means.  The motivations of startups & influencers are vastly different than having experiences.  They're basically just trying to make as much money as possible & a lot of stuff lions will never use like HSV chroma keying, drag & drop, video scopes is just about engagement.

Another problem is there's too much software nowadays so new features & new languages are really superfluous.  Pretty much everything has a zillion free options.  There might be a need for animals to glue the bits together but not for new programming.

The original motivation was just having tools.  Going way back, it was having a personal robotech fighter or F-16.  Being able to record or edit audio at all was unattainable.  Later on, being able to record  audio on 2" 24 track or make movies on 35mm film were unattainable experiences that could be replaced with software & still photos, but nothing was affordable or efficient enough to compare with what could be done on bare metal Linux.  Linux still retains much of the bare metal appeal it originally had.  It can still be stripped down & run a resource intensive program as close to the metal as it did 30 years ago.
