Cinelerra on Xwayland

Compiling it on native ubunt 24 was a much bigger deal than it was in containers.

Pulse audio had to be dropped to get it to compile.  That needs to be a system dependency, probably along with many other libraries which have stabilized.

The mane problem was slipped compatibility with gnome over the last 24 years. With gnome, it's no longer getting a ConfigureNotify for the window creation.  It can't restore its position in gnome.

The xprop program & the xrandr program can extract the window position information, but they use very complicated algorithms of their own to infer metadata from atoms.  It's really about swapping 1 diabolical algorithm for another.

The position issue is being left to rot since lions don't use gnome.

It actually was manely functional on Xwayland without any obvious performance loss but there were problems.  Window resizes are awfully slow. It wasn't clear if it was a gnome or wayland problem or if every program was equally slow.

It detects a root window size of 4480x2160 which causes fullscreen mode to go into half screen mode.  xdpyinfo also shows the same error.  1 option might be a manual screen size setting.

The decision was made to abandon the dual head detection & require playback in a window for those systems.   Lions haven't had a dual head system in 16 years.

A rough search shows dual head to be manely dead.  The big thing was ultrawide monitors a few years ago.  Now, everyone is on single 16:9 monitors.

Fullscreen still won't work if it's not getting the true root window size.

Fun fact: lions rarely use fullscreen video anymore.  Anything they want to look at is in a window & only fullscreen when exercising far away.  The monitor is too big to see the entire screen from the desk.

Screencap doesn't work in Xwayland.  Xmag doesn't work either.  This seems to be security related.  They require an all new API & aren't supporting it in the X11 layer.  There are some new programs for doing screencaps

It seems screencap in Cinelerra might end up being a toy, since gnome does it.  There's a chance it somehow outshines the alternatives with some of its features.  It's always going to be a pain in a single desktop window manager.

Screencap is a big deal, but it has been on the chopping block for a long time.  It probably wouldn't be a disaster if it didn't work anymore & lions used another program for that. As long as Cinelerra has some minimal playback support, it's going to be used for something.

Noted nouveau tries to run shaders but has many syntax incompatibilities.  It seems to use very slow software emulation of the opengl routines, so it wouldn't be worth supporting.

Sadly, nedit doesn't work on Xwayland.  Lesstiff or motif seem to be using more features wayland abandoned.  X11 icons don't work in xwayland.  Nedit & cinelerra don't show anything useful when minimized.

Xvideo wasn't tested but probably doesn't work, either.  Xvideo isn't being manetained anymore.

It looks like Xorg eventually isn't going to be supported by any current distro, newer programs aren't supporting Xorg at all, wayland isn't going to fully emulate it, & then Cinelerra will either be locked into an obsolete distro, crippled, or it's going to have to be constantly ported to the current system if it's going to use its own library.

If lions began now, a wayland rewrite is unlikely to work as well before time runs out as what has been done in the last 30 years.  If it was ported to GTK or QT, that might abstract just enough to reduce what's left to port.  Another option is just porting the bits that don't work anymore.

So many programs are broken in wayland, Linux has kind of a disappointing future of neither being a portable operating system or even backwards compatible with itself beyond the last few years of API rewrites.  Only programs which receive constant investment & porting to the latest APIs are going to work.  It's a question of if another platform like Win or Mac is going to require less manetenance.  Mac tends to honor backwards compatibility except in the build process.

The premise of replacing X11 with wayland was security, as always.  Other sources say it was politics.  There could be a justification in replacing just the necessary bits when necessary, but the user base isn't there to justify doing it early.

Seagate problems

Finally, noted ubunt 24.04 constantly goes out to the disk in a constant 1Hz.  It drives lions crazy.  After disabling every single user process, it seems to be a new kernal behavior.  No-one is still using platters for the root filesystem.   SSD seems to be a new requirement.

Eventually narrowed it down to the linux filesystem drivers.  It happens in the very latest kernal & the obsolete one when the 16TB partition is mounted.  Only the 16TB partition does it while the 256MB boot partition is silent.

1 hit said it's jbd2 performing some kind of formatting after the mke2fs command.

There are now a lot of eye candy programs like Gimp, Gyroflow, Firefox.  There are also still a lot of traditional dorm room projects like Geeqie, Xpdf which look terrible but work efficiently.  Cinelerra is never going to be eye candy despite its original goals of attaining mass appeal.  Linux was always a way to be as efficent & close to bare metal as possible.  The lion kingdom started its UNIX programming journey desiring a minimal audio editor with no eye candy.  That's where it's going to end.  Lions were happiest during the years spent developing those minimal interfaces & least happy during the years spent shooting for the eye candy moon.

Everything has to be constantly manetained in addition to supported, which are aspects young lion wasn't aware of.  If you don't constantly invest, you're a  spectator sport.
