So basically, all the recent movies shot on film were being subsidized by Kodak in the hope ordinary chumps would pick up the trend & eventually make it profitable.  Once all the money is made from engagement in gootube videos about film, there's no rationale for it.

Young lion saw theatric quality digital shooting eventually becoming attainable for individuals & by 2019 results from a lion budget finally matched an 80's dolly crew shooting 16mm.

The VHS transcoding effort hit a wall in the time department.  It really needs a 2nd confuser to record in the background while lions are awake.

Gain adjustment was another problem.  There's no way to get the full dynamic range of an entire tape without multiple stops & starts.  It really needs floating point video capture.

There are still pro cards which capture composite in 12 bits, for a lot of money.  Otherwise, you're in custom board territory.  There is a 10 bit 40megsample ADC in the apartment & an old FPGA.  With a lot of effort, a 10 bit frame grabber could be made.  There's just not a lot of analog footage.

No matter what, Cinelerra would have to run on either raspberry pi or the laptop to have access to that interface.  There are problems with the scopes.  Since it only captures values from 0-255, it doesn't clearly show if something is out of bounds.  Audio has the same problem, but the meters say OVER when something hits maximum.

The video scopes have 100% & 0% lines, but they're not useful. You're really just trying to get the plots to not touch the edges.  The histogram guides seem to be CCIR601 boundaries.  The saturation can be over 100% without overflowing in YUV while it clips in RGB.

Young lion thought the picture controls altered the digital image while the analog side had a strict range, so he never adjusted anything.  In reality, analog video was a waveform with a highly variable gain just like audio, prone to clipping.  The picture controls altered the analog stages just like an audio fader.

The controls were so unused & there were so many bugs in video4linux, they stopped & restarted the video when they changed.  Some drivers locked up.  Some drivers reverted to mono audio.  Some drivers required the settings to be written twice.  That made realtime adjustment pretty useless.

Now that video4linux is so unused & only used for USB dongles,  realtime adjustment might be possible.  At least video4linux had a decent method for querying the picture controls.

There was still a redundant picture editor in the channel editor.  The channel editor is still needed to create the composite, s-video selector.

Fired up the Hi8 for this round of record debugging.  It's about as good as low def ever got.  Discovered the S-video ground isn't connected to the USB dongle.  It requires a separate ground path.  It definitely needs battery power for the lowest noise.

It still has all the channels from the last NTSC tuner, over 20 years ago.  Since the USB dongle has no tuner input, the inputs seem to have all changed to s-video.  The new VCR has an RF modulator so lions could generate a signal for a tuner board or a vintage CRT.  Helas, any tuner board would require a vintage PCI slot.

There are PCI express to PCI adapters, for a limited time & a lot of money.  Looks like that code is just going to stay broken forever.

The only use of such a thing would be re-enacting a day in the life.

Anyways, the good results with that purchase made lions ponder what other vintage crap might be attainable, with unlimited real estate.  A complete commodore 64 setup sometimes comes up, but the fact is young lion had lost a lot of interest in it by 1987.  The potency of its short peak overshadows how brief it was.  All those warm & fuzzy memories were really the discoveries from 1984-1985 & pondering what could be.  For most of its life, its limitations were known & there was no more pondering what could be.

It was manely a word processor by then.  The last trick of any interest from it was extracting audio from the tape drive.  By 1987, the Olivetti M24 seemed to have taken over for games, even with its limited graphics capacity.

The 17 year old 5D finally entered the gadget graveyard.  Mirror is quite fogged up.  Only the center focus sensor works because the focus screen is melted.  Foam bits are liquefying.  It still needs a 3D printed lens button.

Given the problems & the lack of use of any of mirrored cameras, it's hard to justify any more EF lenses.  The T4I only gets used with the 200mm.  The last EF lenses were made in 2020.  Lions almost bought 1 of the last 200mm non macros.  The new wish list has been the RF 16mm.

Hussy had been dropping lines about selling the Vegas house for a while, yet commenters took a while to realize it was actually being sold instead of rented.  It was disappointing that she sold a house in such a prime location, in a relatively down market, but it just showed her desire to never go backwards.

Lions never bothered looking it up.  It appeared to be east of the convention center, so was probably worth $500k.  The family is very communal, wealthy, &  seems to share its wealth among themselves.  She invested in a house in the bay area for her mom.  Her sister shares her 1/2 mil house with her.

The last video showed it north & east of the tower.  The zill found it pretty fast & it was the $500k, smartly shown as 499.

She bought it in 2011 for $90k & had tenants pay it off.  Then it doubled her money the covid way.  That's a gen Xer who made good.  A place like that, 3.6 miles from the center of the strip, .6 miles from Albertsons, 2.6 miles from Targ, would be good for a lion in winter.  Temperatures stay over 110, all summer.  The currency is just falling too fast for a lion to ever afford it without massive debt.  You're not getting a garage for that 1/2 mil either.

Can imagine the Tecopa compound with all the renovations & inflation being over $1M now.  Hussy's fraction would be 1/2 mil, bringing her easily to the 2 comma club.
